Matt's Quilt

Completed my OMG for August.  Here are the pictures.

For Matt

Finished!!!
The pattern is a simple rail fence block, using all solids, finishes at 10".

Basting

Marking and Quilting

Binding

The quilt uses 63 blocks and measures about 70" by 90 inches - a generous twin bed sized quilt.
I used Warm & White batting.  The wide backing is from Connecting Threads.

Wide Backing from Connecting Threads

I made sure that each block had a dark, a light and an aqua/teal.  I made 16 strip sets, yielding a total of 64 blocks.  The quilt uses just 63 (arranged 7 by 9).

So Manly
A touch of softness

That means a single block was left over. Since the backing was already pre-determined,  Using the block in the backing was not an option. So, I made a pencil pouch to go with the quilt.

I hope Matt will like it.  What did you do with your last orphan block? Do tell me.

Very Blue!

Labelled
Texture :-)
And some more pictures - just because.

This is the 11th quilt for 2017 :-) and there are a few more to come!!! Since I finished a quilt, acquiring new fabric is almost a requirement :-p

  7. I love your rail face design, perfect for a jelly roll quilt too. Thank you for the Craftsy info, but I so wish you hadn't shared it, the one week of the year when I am away with NO WIFI or phone signal, so sad :-(

  14. My son would LOVE that quilt! the bars look like they are just floating in midair and although he probably wouldn't like the back as much (he's into very simple) I ADORE that back! YUMMY! Wow! That news about Craftsy is amazing. Won't that crash their servers? There will be MILLIONS watching those classes! Can't wait to see your September OMG. 15. Such an awesome and manly quilt. Your quilting on it looks great! I love what you did with the orphan block. My last orphan block ended up in a scrap vortex quilt. And thanks for the heads up on classes.

  16. A wonderful 'manly' quilt! I love your colours in this, and your quilting is great. Was that a stitch on the machine?

  17. Matt is going to be over the moon! The colors are well chosen and perfect for someone of the male species! Well done, Preeti! I often use my orphan blocks as labels. In the case of this one, I'd probably have sliced it into fourths and used it as the label's border.

  19. Preeti, That is such a beautiful finish. I love the colors. And, of course, more fabric is always a requirement when finishing a quilt. Happy sewing! Andrea

  20. Preeti, I love this quilt! You know I have three boys all grown now, but everything boy just sort of reminds my heart that they were once little or younger. That's what your quilt does with those gorgeous blues. The grey is the perfect complement to those blues. Thanks for letting us know about an optional fun way to spend Labor Day.

  21. Very nice! I can't believe you have sewn 11 quilts this year! I have made just 7 in my life, and that includes 3 baby quilts! Whenever I see your beautiful quilts I tell myself I shiuld just do easy straight line machine quilting. But what are my current projects? That's right: handquilting my Splendid Sampler and practising FMQ on a quilt I made years ago...

  22. Oh that's gorgeous and I'm in awe of your productivity! My orphan blocks are currently sat on the floor of my studio waiting to lear their fate - I'm thinking of sending them off to join a block orphanage as I can't really think of anything to do with them myself right now but time will tell!

  23. We are on the same wave length as I just quilt my son's quilt with a similar stitch--and it is mostly blue. Lovely job you've done with yours!

  24. I love this quilting--it is exquisite and would love to know how you did it. You are very generous with your photos and I should take a cue from you. BTW, it's about time your secret project is going to be revealed; I've been waiting.

  27. Oh my goodness, your rail fence quilt is gorgeous. That blue just pops! And the backing is wonderful. I'm curious what you are up to with that beautiful fabric for your secret sewing . . .

  28. I have not yet done a rail fence quilt and I love this one. Also love that scalloped stitch quilting. Great finish Preeti!

  29. Hi Preeti,
I love the colors of this quilt. I never would have thought to use the same color on each end of the rail fence strips. It makes it look like the center colors are just floating there. I love the quilting too. ~smile~ Roseanne

  32. Well I STARTED a Fun with Curves or something, but didn't get very far...too many other things going on today. Beautiful blue quilt (that backing---LOVE) and so smart of you to make a pencil pouch! Off to go watch a class or two I hope!

  33. This quilt is gorgeous and I am in love with your backing fabric! Turning your extra block into a matching pencil case was such a wonderful idea. Thankfully, I don't usually end up with extra blocks, but wouldn't it be fun to turn random extra blocks into a quilt? Would be interesting to see how it would turn out. Blocks of all kinds and sizes.

  34. Beautiful quilt! And I think the pencil case was a great idea!

  35. Great quilt - nice quilting pattern on it too. Love the use of the extra block for a pencil case.

  36. Jane Austen fabric - how wonderful . I love Jane Austen and reread her often . Matt's quilt is great , the blue rail fence is really set off by your backing fabric . And I can't believe how many quilts you have made this year - 11 .... that puts my 3 or maybe 4 into perspective !

  37. I really like the quilting on this one and am just a bit envious of your ability to do that. (I only have straight stitch, which is fine with me most of the time.) The pencil pouch is a fun way to use that block. My orphans usually go on the back, but I don't often have them as much as orphan yardage and bits that go in the back. I did binge watch the videos on Labor Day. Some Jacquie Gering, Cristina Cameli, Christa Watson and Amy Johnson. I watched in double time to find the parts that were relevant to me (not recommended--it made me twitchy, but I was able to watch some shows that I wouldn't buy because my machines don't have the settings required for some techniques, and some that I wanted to see if I'd like them in my library). Fun!
