Lo and Behold

It started here, when Julie mentioned my name on her blog in the same sentence with Scrap Vortex quilts.  It was official.
Hi, I am Preeti and I am a scrap vortex addict. And here is my latest - meet Lo and Behold.

Lo and Behold
Scrappy

Bright

I wanted to quilt a spiral in true scrap vortex spirit.
I found the center and started to quilt - p a i n f u l l y   s l o w l y.
And then I came to the horror of my horrors conclusion - I cannot quilt a tight circle/spiral with my walking foot.

Painstakingly stitches were removed. But I was not going to give up.
Just because I couldn't do a spiral in the beginning does not mean that I won't do a spiral at all.

Modification Quilting - I started with a triangle and echo quilted it till it was large enough and then started the circular spiral quilting.

Somewhat Spiral

Now, it is possible that the quilting spiral flattened out as it reached the edges. But you are ok with that, right?

Triangle in a Spiral

Let me show the back? Oh my quiltyness, you gotta see the back. I used the scrappy triangles leftover from Fire Pit to make the pieced backing.

Pieced Backing

From Scraps to Scrumptious

Princess Bonniebella's little lamb was missing.  Oh no.

Princess Bonniebella

May be the birds saw him scamper off.
Did you see my little lamb, she asked.

Guiding Birds

The birds chirped and turned their heads left. Bonniebella followed them. But she was so engrossed in looking at the birds that she stepped on a crab.

Crabby Crabs

Bitten by the crab, she cried out in pain. The lazy turtles opened their droopy eyes.
The fox jumped over the bush.

Jumpy Fox

Charlie Brown heard her scream. What happened he asked.
The dancing elves explained.
Charlie rushed to help the princess get rid of the crab claw. Snoopy followed - this was a new adventure.

Charlie Brown & Snoopy

As the pain eased, Bonniebella noticed Snoopy. Oh that is an adorable puppy, she said.
Snoopy smiled a big floppy smile and scampered away.
They ran after him. Over the fields and flowers, past the foxes and the penguins.
Let me chase those pink and purple cats, thought Snoopy, and he switched direction.

Colorful Cats enticed Snoopy

The princess and Charlie followed.
The colorful turtles just nodded with amusement - Why the fuss, they thought?
When Snoopy saw the fierce monsters, he froze.

Fierce Monsters

Finally, Charlie and the princess caught up with him.
Charlie scolded him but the princess held him. And Snoopy was calm.

I am hungry, said Charlie. I am exhausted, said the princess.
Oh look there is a cup cake and candy too.

Cake but it is Fake

But it was just a picture. No real cake.
The elves whispered - you can make your own cake.

Dancing Elves

How?
Here are the ingredients - eggs, butter, milk and flour.

Eggs and Milk

Look, I found a whisk.

See the whisk? Next to the crabs.

But how will we cook it. We have no oven.
May be the fire-breathing dragons can help with that, winked the elves.

Fire breathing dragons

The wafting smell from the baking was an invitation to all the creatures - crabs, cats, birds, turtles, and penguins.
Dancing (on the ice) Penguins

Foxes and owls came too. Lo and Behold there was a party and everyone enjoyed the cake.

Foxes and Owls

And although you can buy and eat readymade cupcake isn't it sweeter when you make your own - be it a quilt or a cupcake?
This is my story. What is yours?

P.S. Charlie asked the princess - why did you leave the safety of your palace?
I lost my little lamb and went looking for him.

Can you find the lamb? Do you see him now?

Do you know why the lights on the Christmas tree shine so bright?  Because they are plugged into the sunflower which draws its energy from the sun. :-D

Plugged in to the Sunflower :-)
Lo and Behold finished at about 57" by 58.5". this is my 18th finish of the year and I am loving it.

Hi, my dear!

You look lovely

and so calm...

Labelled

Finished!!!

I will be linking with all my favorite linky parties (see full list on the sidebar). What makes you shine today? I'd love to hear from you.

  3. Your spirals turned out amazing! It is hard to get a tight circle with a walking foot, but you did what works for you! You are a master story teller, and a vortex queen, not to mention hilarious!

  4. Lovely vortex quilt. You used a wonderful array of bright and funky fabrics, and that triangle in a spiral is inspired. I just love the back, it’s my favourite way to widen a standard width of fabric, use up leftover blocks, and add lovely interest, all in one go. Beautiful Preeti.

  5. Ooooh, a new quilting technique! Love your spiral. It would have been interesting to continue the triangle, too. So much color here, and a pieced back, plus a great story. Have a great day!

  10. Hi Preeti! What a fun and beautiful finish to share with us today. I wonder why you couldn't stitch the spiral? It sounds like you had the most important part - starting off s-l-o-w-l-y. Your improvised choice looks great anyway - who cares about why it didn't work. ~smile~ Roseanne

  12. Wow I need to do this. I love how it turned out and love the backing too.

  13. If you took a close up photo of all the fabric in the story, it would make a great quilt book. Love how you incorporated the triangles in the scraps. So very happy quilt.

  14. Great story, and the quilt is amazing! Love love those details, cute little lamb ;))

  15. What an awesome quilt. Truly a labour of love!

  16. I absolutely love seeing it and reading all about it. After finishing the two solid scrap vortex quilts I want to go make another one. I was thinking Christmas, but now I’m wondering about novelty prints. They are addicting. If only I had more time to sew.

  17. Cute quilt and such a clever story to go with it!! I enjoy reading your posts and seeing your quilts.

  18. Your posts are always an adventure but this was by far the most imaginative! Your quilt looks magnificent! So magnificent, it’s difficult to believe it isn’t planned. I think you should write that story down and gift it with the quilt, pictures and all.

  19. Your inventive story is as enjoyable as your wonderful scrap vortex. I have one started, but I seem to have far more dark, somber fabrics than bright happy ones, which is very odd, since I've made so many bright, happy kids quilts. Oh well, I'll keep at it anyway.

  26. Great post. Creative solution to a quilting dilemma. I know your focus in the post is the spiral, but your pieces are so colorful. This is a cheerful quilt. I love it.

  27. Hi Preeti! The story told by this quilt is gorgeous! I am in the process of sewing quilts from scraps, but it does not tell such a story :( It's nothing, I still have a lot of children's bright fabric scraps, maybe I'll try to tell my story too? This is a beautiful quilt ! Greetings from far away

  28. And in the heart of the spinning vortex is a triangle of joy, whimsy and innocence that is truly wonderful! Love the quilting, the half square triangles in the vortex, the back, but especially the story.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Very nice! Love the scraps. I have encountered the same problem with big spirals and used a fmq for instead. You can see the foot I used for help here:

  30. Preeti, you nailed this one. I love the scrappy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Fantastic! This quilt just makes me so happy!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Will you include this story with the quilt? It takes "I Spy" to a whole new level! Staring the quilting with the triangle spiral was inspired. Not only easier, but adds an extra layer of interest.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Scrap vortex quilts are so much fun to make! I love yours!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. The quilt is wonderful. It's a great quilt to wrap up in on a rainy day and create stories with.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That is one bright scrap vortex! Love your scrap diamonds on the back - nice touch!

  36. Oh, Preeti, you have no idea (well no, actually you do) how I needed this fun post (and quilty photos) to lift my spirits this week. I wonder if little kids make up stories of all the things they find in their quilts. If they don’t, maybe they need a little book or lesson to teach them how to do that, and you are just the person to write it. Oh, and I love your solution to quilting the center of a spiral.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think you've added another element to making a scrap vortex quilt, which I love making also. When sewing one patch to another it has to tell a story now--this post and story was a hoot! I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Preeti, this quilt is amazing. Sometimes I think a really scrappy quilt can look messy. But this one doesn't - just bright and (somehow?) orderly! The story is adorable. Janine has the right idea. You should somehow develop a child's Quilty storybook out of this. Your writing is so much fun and always makes me smile. The triangle working into spiral is so clever. Looks awesome.

  39. You know, any story (true or not) that end in cake is a happily ever after story. Love the quilt and colors and story and you!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree, you are the queen of the scrap vortex. This quilt has everything - bright colors, fun fabrics and beautiful quilting. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is MARvelous Preeti!!!! Oh the fun stories you tell!! This reminds me I have a scrappy vortex of my own, buried and much neglected...maybe I dig it out this quarter? You have inspired me!!! xoxo, my friend!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. YOU make everyone shine! I had a big smile on my face the whole time I was reading the story of Lo and Behold! Great job on the scrap piecing and the spiral quilting! You make me want to start another one and be a scrap vortex addict with you!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow, love your quilt. Every inch is so interesting. Nice job on the spiral quilting.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love your solution to getting the spiral started, Preeti! I'm going to have to remember that. What a fun quilt to look at - so many wonderful scraps!

    ReplyDelete
  45. The front is fun, but the back is awesome!! What makes me shine? Getting through a busy week (see my post) and accomplishing one of my OMG projects . . . and today we have sunshine and warm temperatures. Beach walk this afternoon!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Fire breathing dragon! Yes! Love it. Great finish.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Not sure what I am looking forward to more, your quilts or the stories :) You are such a great storyteller! I can't believe what you constructed there. If that is what parents and kids do with their vortex quilts... we should only sew those, and bake cake of course :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. The story with this quilt is awesome! It really made us look at the individual pieces in this quilt. So often the individual fabrics are lost in scrappy quilts. It would be fun if you printed the story and stitched it to the back. The back is beautiful, too!

    ReplyDelete
  49. What fun! Love the quilt and the story!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Don't know how I missed this last week. I love the story of princess Bella and I'm glad she found her sheep, but I'm worried how she can cross over the edge of her world to the other side. This is a scrap vortex meets I spy quilt. Beautiful as always!

    ReplyDelete
  51. What a fantastic quilt! I just ran into the same problem with my walking foot (which my other machine handles fine). What a pain!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Great story and quilting. The triangle solution is inspired! And I think the back would work just as well as a front! Beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So much joy in one spot. A lovely quilt and a sweet little story.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Love your story. Are you sure you aren't a writer?

    ReplyDelete
  55. The quilt reflects your style, Preeti. I love your story.

  56. Woah!! That is one amazing quilt! Sweet story too :)
