Scraps and Squirrels

Picture the scene at the end of the party.  Empty bottles, missing silverware, dirty dishes, stained carpet, mess everywhere and you don't even know where to begin.

Scraps Explosion

Half Made Blocks

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge feels like a party and it IS a lot of fun...till you get to this time of the year.

Now the party is coming to a close and there are blocks everywhere. How many blocks? Did I lose/misplace some? I was going to redo that one but then forgot. Where do I even start?

Framed Jewel Blocks (Light Borders)

I should start at counting the blocks.  That way I can answer the question - how many blocks?

Will it be enough for one quilt? Or more. May be I will need to make a few more.

Aah Good Intentions!!!

As I opened the box where I had been storing the RSC (Project#2 now renamed Framed Jewels) blocks, something else fell out.

OOPS. It was a squirrel. Actually it was too pretty to be a squirrel. It was a chipmunk.

So off I went chasing that chipmunk cuteness.  Please excuse me Framed Jewels. It is not like you are going anywhere.

Leftover Strip Sets

These strips were left over from Shadow of Light. Like many scraps and block trimmings, they were too small to use and too big to throw away.

What if...

Becoming Something

Finished Zipper Pouch

Chipmunk Captured!!!

Insides Matter Too

But wait there is more. When I opened the bag containing zippers, five other chipmunks jumped out. Who knew I was housing a whole family of chipmunks in between RSC blocks?

A Whole Family!!!

I found a few other fabrics, already cut into perfect sizes, ready to become zippered pouches.

When did I do that?

Fall Colors

Perfectly Coordinated Zippers and Tabs

Sandra, I am sure you have come across a squirrel within a squirrel.  A Dreami within a Dreami. Well, actually I did not drop the first one but chased all six at once.

Colorfully yours

Feed Me, they yell!!!

And here they are - the whole family together. Look at them, so innocently posing for the picture.

A very Big Dreami

By now the Framed Jewel Blocks were completely forgotten. But I counted the Picket Star Quilt blocks. Enough for three quilts - one each of small, medium and large :-D

Nine blocks in a small quilt. The next thing I know a flimsy was finished.

Picket Star Blocks - Finished Flimsy

The Picket Star Quilt Blocks (17" square) are time consuming to make but the quilt top comes together so quickly. I added a border to protect the precious points. The flimsy finished at about 54" square.

What about the Framed Jewel Blocks? That will have to be in an another blogpost. Did you chase a squirrel? Were you sidetracked? Or did you stay the course. I'd love to know.

I will be sharing with all my favorite linky parties including Angela's So Scrappy Linky and Sandra's Dreami. See full list on the sidebar.

Hope you have a safe Thanksgiving.

These are difficult times and we may not be able to see our loved ones. It is hard and it is heartbreaking. I understand. But there is good news. The vaccine will be widely available next year. We have to hang tight for just a few more months. We can do this. Together we can beat this.

Next year we will have a huge party to make up for all the missed parties.  We will cherish every embrace, every kiss and every handshake. I am sure my arms will ache from receiving and giving big squishy hugs. But I promise to clean up all the mess from that huge party, I promise. It will be worth it!!!

  1. Oh! I love the pouches. Maybe you'll help me with a purse I made. I put the zipper in wrong - 3 times!!! It is in a bin waiting to be rescued. Have a Happy and safe Thanksgiving.

  2. Your squirrelly zipper pouches are lots of fun, Preeti! I love that you can open a drawer and pull out all those zippers - very squirrel enabling... Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. so many nice projects that you are working on and so colorful! Happy Thanksgiving to you and you are right we just need to hang on for several more months and the vaccines will be ready - I'm getting ready for big hugs at the family reunion this summer - and even bigger hugs from my daughters and younger brother who lives close by - he is almost like one of my children except I would have been 12 when he was born LOL

  4. I love your adorable chipmunks, and your Picket Star top, too! I think when this virus is over, it's going to be like the end of WWII, with everybody hugging everybody! My mom got kissed by a soldier on V.E. Day--and she was only 9 years old!

  5. Those Jewel Star blocks look even more like jewels now that they are sitting next to other colors. So pretty!!

The squirrels have been having their way with me lately too. But that's ok because I'm enjoying the journey.

  7. You have been busy as a beaver, er chipmunk. Some great pouches there, which I suspect will become gifties to someone. So happy to see the Picket stars start to align into quilts. Happy Thanksgiving.

  9. The purses are fabulous! Were they made using Lazy Girls method? I made a few of theirs and know that they use one long piece of zipper too. Great use of scraps and lonely blocks!

  10. That was QUITE the adventure those scraps took you on, Preeti!! You managed a completed quilt top, too? Congratulations on having SEW much fun using up scraps!

  12. Oh, your squirrelly, I mean chipmunky pouches are so cute! I have one to sew for my brother for Christmas to send along with his (panel of old-fashioned truck) Christmas quilt. Your first Picket Star flimsy is delightful. And if I know you, they’re all going to be stunning quilts!

  19. Hi Preeti! OMG. Now we have cute little chipmunks to deal with?!! And a whole FAMILY of them, too. Well, I can easily see how they charmed their way into the RSC box. The Jewels will be patient. Geez, I am starting the RSC for the first time in 2021. I will be sure to use a secure container for my multitude of blocks, AND keep a running tally. Thank you for the tips! {{Hugs}} Happy Thanksgiving to you and your peeps. ~smile~ Roseanne

  21. How come all of your squirrels turn out to be so darling? Love the zipper pouches, and we all know you can't throw scraps away. Sometimes they turn into fun stuff. I also love the picket stars and can't wait to see the bigger quilts. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  22. Enjoy reading your posts. Now, i've chased bats, birds, wasps and flys out of the house but never chipmunks. If only u had a video! I can hear you giggling as you chased em around the house. Good work! Love the bags. I took to making bags at the beginning of shutdown as i could not gain any mojo for other work. It helped me move on.... Glad you still share joy. Barbara

  23. Wonderful projects and chasing chipmunks....ha ha. The bags are making me long for my machine, on an extended spa day. I really. hope I get a day or two with it before we return to Maine, where I am waiting for another machine. Good. news is I will be ready with projects when the machines find their way to me. Thanks for all the fun you share, and enjoy a day of gratitude this week. We are just the immediate family, perfect for this year....hubs, son and dog!

  24. Chipmunks are adorable to look at...until the burrow and dig holes all over your yard! I love you chipmunks much better! The Jewel blocks are so gorgeous!

  25. HAHAHA!!! I am envisioning all those chipmunks, running gleefully rampant through your studio! Better chipmunks than spiders or snakes, right? Roaches would be pretty bad, too. That's my mending analogy -- the mending basket is about as welcome in my studio as a nest of cockroaches. ;-). Your bags are adorable and you know how I love your Picket Stars. Every time I visit your blog, I want to drop everything and make whatever you're making. Then I walk into my studio and I can't even see my cutting table beneath the piles of pieces for everything else already in progress. I'm blaming the cockroaches! Happy Thanksgiving!

  26. Your scrap jumbles are so appealing! I used to be able to put in a zipper without a second thought. That was two sewing machines ago. At one time I actually had chipmunks in my sewing room! (There's a tale.)

  27. Cute chipmunks -- pictures of the animal and the finished pouches! Picket Stars really look terrific. I particularly take note of the border to protect the points. I need to remember that instead of whacking off points after quilting! Our family is not getting together this T-day. We had talked about meeting at a park for a walk or distanced chatting. That has been caboshed. We'll have a Zoom gathering and call it done. Looking at the news showing packed airports makes me sad -- the worst is still to come. Sigh.

  29. Great post Preeti, I love that there were so many squirrels and chipmunks running around your sewing space. Great use of scraps and I also love how your Picket Stars look in the completed top!

  30. I immediately noticed that lovely lavender, blue, gold, etc stripe in your first photo because I had it, too! You are so clever to make all these pouches with such fantastic scraps. They will be greatly appreciated.

  31. What a lovely bunch of chipmunks! Possible Christmas gifts? Wonderful idea!

  32. framed jewel blocks with the white background prints is AWESOME. I want to stop everything and try to make one like that. I love it. I think the print with vines really gives it the movement, and don't have that but I do have a lot of print on white backgrounds.

  33. Ah, squirrels... or chipmunks by the way, so cute too! Your pouches are so lovely, you couldn't possibly look away ;) Love these rainbow strips, coloring pencils, houses, pretty!!
I love your new flimsy too, beautiful mix of fabrics, you are the Queen (or Master?) for arranging them together!

  34. LOVE the bag made with the leftover strip sets. Squirrels or not you have been SEW productive. Great job.

  35. Who knew quilting could be such an adventure!

  36. I like seeing squirrels in real life... in quilting it means yet another WIP so I am currently avoiding them - or at least trying - I think I would one by accident recently :) And how crazy that you have enough blocks for three quilts! xo

  37. Pouches are the prefect squirrel project! Yours are so fun. I’m
excited to see your Picket Stars into a flimsy! I’ll watch for the next ones!

  42. At least you "caught" what you chased. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving and are getting in lots of stitching time this weekend.

  43. Love your zipper pouches, and your blog post. I've taken part in RSC some years. I always end up with too many blocks in different plastic bags. This year I've made something out of them as I go. Better for me, at least.

  44. I just love your pouches! Isn't it satisfying to make useful things from scraps, and to sew freely and happily? Thanks for linking up your chipmunks. :-)
