From Miamas with Love

I have a new finish, a giveaway and an announcement. But first I must tell you about this book - "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell you She is Sorry" by Frederik Backman.

My favorite!!!

Full of heart, hope and more...

Elsa, who is seven, (almost eight) had a bad day at school.  Three older girls tore her Gryffindor scarf and threw it in the toilet. The very same day, Elsa's Granny breaks into a zoo and throws turds at the police when approached.  The following conversation happens.

“I didn’t want you to remember this day because of the scarf. So I thought instead you could remember it as the day your Granny broke into a zoo—”

“And escaped from a hospital,” Elsa says with a grin.
“And escaped from a hospital,” says Granny with a grin.
“And threw turds at the police.”
“Actually, it was soil! Or mainly soil, anyway.”
“Changing memories is a good superpower, I suppose.”
Granny shrugs.
“If you can’t get rid of the bad, you have to top it up with more goody stuff.”
“That’s not a word.”
“I know.”
“Thanks, Granny,” says Elsa and leans her head against her arm.
And then Granny just nods and whispers: “We’re knights of the kingdom of Miamas, we have to do our duty.”
Because all seven-year-olds deserve superheroes.
And anyone who doesn’t agree needs their head examined.

(This is an excerpt from "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell you She is Sorry" taken From Simon and Schuster website).

From Miamas with Love!!!

Miamas is a kingdom in the Land of Almost Awake and that is where all the stories come from. And that is exactly where this quilt comes from. I have named it "From Miamas with Love".

Shall we count the sheep?

Penguins and Puppies

The Birds whispered to the Llama...

How many cats does it take to make a quilt?

A Monkey and a Panda walk into a quilt...

I heart you

It is a zoo in here...

Scraps from Bernie - Put to use

Scrappy & Happy

Pieced over many months, I sewed scraps in between projects. As the year draws to an end it was time to wrap up this storybook of a quilt.  It isn't easy to put together blocks of varying shapes and sizes. But that is exactly my superpower :-)

Clearly I am in love with this book - "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell you She is Sorry" by Frederik Backman. I cannot recommend it enough. After I had listened to the audiobook thrice, I bought the physical book. It has made me think and laugh and cry - often at the same time.

Paul: So you are a quiltmaker from Miamas?
Me: No, I am a knight from Miamas. Quilting is my superpower :-D My quilts tell my stories.
Paul: How big is your quilt?
Me: It is multi-dimensional.
Paul: Multi-dimensional? How?
Me: It has four sides and all four sides have different lengths.
Paul: Don't you mean crooked?
Me: You could say wonky but I prefer multi-dimensional.

Like Granny said in the book, "You have standards and I have double standards. So I win."

Paul: Who is getting this multicolored and multi-dimensional quilt?
Me: Mom. I am taking it to India with me.
Paul: I am sure she will love it.
Me: Also she can show it off to others and she won't even have to say - "my daughter is so talented"
Paul: That is what others will say...
Me: Exactly!!! You are so smart :-D

I love this shot!!!

I love this model!!!

"With Love from Miamas" finished at about 68" by about 77", but let's not quibble about exactness here.  Its multi-dimensional aspects are perfect for family snuggles :-D
I will be sharing with all my favorite linky parties. See full list on the sidebar.

As I am quilting it now, I am also thinking about binding choice.

Quilting in process

I am thinking turquoise will look lovely with the floral backing. But light or dark? What do you think?

I am leaning to the light one, which is so not me. May be I should go with pink instead :-p

  1. I loved that book, too, Preeti! "Every 7 year old needs a superhero." That's when I knew it would be a good story! I love how it inspired this quilt, too - it is wonderful - and it tells lots of good stories. Sewing lots of little scraps together is most definitely your superpower!

  2. You make this Grandma smile. Love your quilt. Please share pictures when you gift it in India. You are inspirational. A story behind every quilt.💖💖

  3. The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah - it was sad, educational and so relatable to events today.
I love your blog, I love your quilt and I am sure you have superpowers!

  4. love the quilt and your book sounds entertaining. I read so many books that I haven't a clue which one I liked the best this year. I don't write them all down and so I really don't remember! (I like the blue fabric)

  5. I like the light binding, but both would be lovely. Thank you so much for all your wonderful stories-maybe it's time YOU wrote a book. Your story telling superpower has many ways of sharing!
My favorite book of this year has been, "Leaving Isn't the Hardest Thing, by Lauren Hough. It's gut-wrenching and funny at the same time.

  6. I love the scrappiness of "From Miamas With Love". I am inspired to gather the various "idea bundles" of fabric and start piecing - the more prints the better!

  7. Oh what a fabulous sounding book and I love that it inspired you while making your fabulous scrap quilt! And I love your RSC quilt too, beautiful.

  8. That is one of my favorite books of 2021. Love your quilt, and your mom will, too. Enjoy all of your posts. Have a wonderful visit with your mom. take Care

  9. Hello, thank you for inspiring me today. I love the multi-dimensional aspect of the quilt. It is a winner for sure. You have a very smart husband. I enjoy the conversations you post. Pick the lighter backing(my opinion- and do whatever your heart says).
Favorite book this year... Starman Jones by Heinlein. Because he makes a path for himself where no road is seen. I think I need to pick up your book, sounds delightful. Now I'd better get going into the sewing room.

  10. Love this idea, I so need to find the time to organize my scraps and make a real scrappy quilt! Your themes and photos tell even more than the story. They add character and charm! My favorite book has been “The Traveler’s Gift” by Andy Andrews. Lots of great messages from that to take away. I am enjoying your blog, and hope our paths cross someday. Thank you for being a light in a world with so many dark corners. That is a true superpower, indeed. 🌟

  11. Love your quilts, love your story telling or should I say the telling of the stories behind the quilts. Favourite book so far this year? I'm going to have to say 'Go tell the Bees that I am Gone' (Outlander 9) by Diana Gabaldon - I've not read it yet; it only came out today but I know I will enjoy it and it will be my favourite book of the year although I believe it ends the series :-(

  12. I do love your story telling ..... and your quilt. I will look out for that audio book. Where The Crawdads Sing has been my favourite this year -

  13. Your mom will love that quilt AND that book. And I am personally smitten with your RSC star quilt, because star quilts are my favorites and your fabric picks are always so sublime! If you can’t decide on a binding color, why not do a pieced binding from your scraps, engaging your superpowers once again? Otherwise pink or turquoise, or stripes…. Why are you even asking us? Everything you pick looks amazing in your quilts! Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels for you and Paul! I expect to read a lively Thanksgiving Car Ride Dialogue blog post next week. ;-)

  14. Well, according to my Goodreads account, my favorite books this year have been "Fool Me Once" by Harlan Corben and "The Dry" by Jane Harper. I also really liked "The Shack" by William Paul Young. I'm currently reading "Troubled Blood" by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling). I have to say that I have read several of Fredrik Bachman's books and, while all different, I have enjoyed all but one. Love the turquoise bindings and I too am leaning towards the lighter one. Have a great, safe trip!

  15. Every 7 yo definitely needs a superhero or 2 or 3! I love this book and the idea of it. I have slacked off on reading but I listened to The Gown and loved it. We are 3 for the holiday here, not as big as many years, but perfect for this year!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Multi-dimensional! Love this term and it describes many of my projects. I like to think of myself as quirky and purposeful, so making a 4 sided quilted piece with all sides a different length works perfectly for me. I haven't read too many books this year, but one I really enjoyed was The Neighbors by Hannah Mary McKinnon.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I always enjoy seeing your quilts! You have a great eye for color. Your mom will love the quilt! My favorite book this year is The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I so enjoy seeing your quilts, and reading your exchanges with Paul. My favorite book so far this year is The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. I'm not entirely happy with the ending, but most of the book is magical. The first 20-30 pages in particular seem to stand at the center of a hurricane and yet plunge breathlessly forward at the same time.
I would go with the light turquoise.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I always love your scrap vortex quilts, and this one is is just gorgeous! My favorite book this year has been “The Lost Apothecary” by Sarah Penner. Reading it spawned an interest in mudlarking (well, watching it on YouTube).

    ReplyDelete
  20. ן LOVE this quilt, so many small steps and a giant beautiful finish!!! i think my favorite book this year is a picture book called RAIN, just drawings of a day in the rain.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I need to read this one. So far Where The Crawdads Sing is my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thank you for sharing your super powers with us. I have always been intimidated by these kinds of scrappy quilts but think I need to do one now!! My fave book this year has been The Round House by Louise Eldridge.

  23. I can see the smoke pouring from your sewing machine from overwork as you created this beauty! May your machine never break.

Fredrik Backman is my favorite author. The latest one I read, Anxious People, is my new favorite of his. I can never listen to his books only once. I enjoy them each time when I hear something new that I hadn't heard before. Every time I read another one of his books, I am in awe that he keeps getting better and better... much like your quilting adventures!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Congrats on that colorful quilt finish, Preeti! I read "My Grandmother..." years ago. It was a delightful book, but when I passed it around my knit group, I was surprised to find that it got mixed reviews. About the binding for your RSC quilt, I would need to see the options once the quilting is done. I'll be interested to discover what you choose, but I might be tempted to go with purple! :o))

  25. I have been reading several Amish books this year, all good and by various authors. They were given to a friend and she let me borrow them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Amazing quilt, Preeti!!! Your rainbow quilt is looking beautiful, too. I always lean toward darker binding. That's just me. Favorite book this year, or rather favorite series--Chet and Bernie Mysteries by Spencer Quinn. Start with the first in the series--"Dog On It". A private eye and his trained police dog solve mysteries, with all stories told from the perspective of Chet, the dog!

    ReplyDelete
  27. there is no contest RE the best book i read this year. it was definitely My Grandmother Asked Me.... Engaging story line and brilliant creative writing. Congrats for your creativity in naming the quilt. How you put those odd blocks together is amazing. Safe travels to visit your mom.

  28. Love your beautiful quilt and your description of your favorite book. I enjoyed listening to The Daughters of Erietown by Connie Schultz and Eleven by Patricia Reilly Giff.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You do such amazing scrap quilts, full of color and beauty and fun. I'm sure your mama will love it. I've not read that book, but I know many like it. Favorite book this year - my poor little brain can't remember everything I've read this year - so I'll go with The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton. A new author to me, and I've enjoyed him quite a bit. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Paul!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I vote for the darker binding and I love that floral you've used on the back. I try to keep my favorite books to the top three: Good Morning Midnight by Lily Brooks Dalton, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, and The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Richardson.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dear sweet Preeti, your mom will love that quilt. It's so vibrant and colorful, and I'm sure she will not be measuring to make sure it's square. Definitely use the darker binding. Also, I just started reading The 1619 Project, which is very interesting and you would like. If you're looking for something lighter, I liked Game On by Janet Evanovich and Spare Change by Mike Lupica. Happy Thanksgiving!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love how you put together pieces of different sizes and all the different fabrics you incorporated into this amazing quilt! You make me laugh when I read your posts...your captions under the pictures, your conversation with Paul, etc. You are very talented! A Man Called Ove also by Fredrik Backman is one of my favorite books and another is Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. So many good books, it is hard to narrow down to just one. Happy Thanksgiving!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just love all the goodness in this quilt. So much attention to detail. Hope your Mom will love it too. Now I'm off to look up the book. It sounds quite interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, I love, love, love the quilt and your conversation with Paul. Thank you for such a wonderful heart warming post.

    ReplyDelete
  35. A beautiful quilt indeed. I love the scrappy look of you quilt. It just screams happy, happy, happy and stimulates the mind. Your mother will love it. My last read was by David Levien, City of the Sun. It was not a book I would usually read; however, as most of my books are given to my by friends, I read it. I do love mysteries. My next read will definitely be by Fredrik Backman.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I enjoy your posts, especially the conversations with Paul. :) Your mom will love the quilt.
I like the darker turquoise for binding.
I have read several books this year and have not really enjoyed any of them. This is probably because I am trying to branch out of my preferred genre - fantasy. Next year I will mix it up.
Those fabrics are gorgeous. Thanks for the chance to win. I understand if you can't ship to Canada if I win as postal rates have gotten quite obnoxious.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I read all your posts, though I am not a blog responder. I enjoy your sensibility and creativity, and your quilts! One of my favorite books this year was Hamnet, by Maggie O'Farrell. Other books of hers are also excellent, including The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox and The Distance Between Us. Enjoy the holidays with your family!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow is the word for your quilt. It is inspiring me to make one as well, and I always seem to go for a darker binding on my quilts. A couple books I have enjoyed this year were -- Where the Crawdads Sing, and The Shack. I'm going to look for the one you highly recommend.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My favorite book??? So many to choose from but I did enjoy "Murder in Old Bombay", Nev March. Very different from my world. And I'm enjoying the biography of Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

You deserve a prize for stitching all those pieces together! Your mother will enjoy especially if she has a little granddaughter (or son) to cuddle with. Enjoy your trip. Are you taking Paul with you?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Your quilt is dazzling, and so NEAT. I feel like if I ever made a scrap vortex it would be an unholy mess. I usually use darker bindings because I am gross and I make the edges of my quilts gross and therefore I assume everyone else does too. I have had a couple of good reads this year (I'm mostly sci-fi/fantasy, because I don't need any gritty realism in my escapism): one is Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard (It's about a civil servant. It drags in spots, but i love her characters) and another is a 2-book series called The Scholomance by Naomi Novik, which is kind of like if Jurassic Park was set at Hogwarts. I'm just queuing up Old Man's War by John Scalzi and The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey. Will let you know if they change my mind about my 2021 bests!

  41. What a great short story from the book! And what a fun quilt to bring to your Mom. And your favorite shot is really awesome. xo
PS: And I would go with dark turquoise. Or you can of course try pink ;)

  43. I really enjoyed reading that book. It is worth the re-read. Your quilt is gorgeous - lucky Mom. I bet you could look at it all day with all the different fabric. The reflection shot is exquisite - I almost thought there were two quilts for a second.

  44. Currently reading The Olive Tree by Lucinda Riley. Really enjoying your RSC progress

  45. Your Miamas quilt is awesome! It’s bright, happy, and full of little surprises in the blocks. I’m sure your mom will love it.

I am a voracious reader so am having trouble picking a favorite book for the year. I’m currently reading Game On, by one of my favorite authors Janet Evanovich. Her books make me think (mystery) but also brings some chuckles.

  46. Oh what a lovely quilt for your Mom. It's extra special because there are so many eye spy fabrics to find. I liked the Backman book as well, but my favorite book of his has to be A Man Called Ove. In my opinion, that is his best book by far!!! I have had several favorite books this year including The Silent Patient by Alex Michealides, American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins and The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett. A book I that I just read last week takes place in India and is called The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi...it was a good read as well. I just don't know if you'll want to read a book about your home country. What a wonderful quilt share and I love seeing your creations and reading your dialogue with your hubby. You make me smile! Happy thanksgiving to you and yours!! XOXO

  49. Your "From Miamis With Love" quilt is a glorious celebration of scraps! I'm sure your mother will love it! I think you have many superpowers, including the stories you share in your blog posts. I haven't read "my Grandmother Asked Me..." yet, but I've enjoyed several of Backman's other books, especially Beartown. My favorite book so far this year has been The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab.

  50. I’m not a big reader but lean toward self help type books. The current read is “Think Again” by Adam Grant

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love your scrappy quilt. I am now inspired to start one! I am enjoying reading all the comments and getting new to me authors to try. I so busy bouncing between reading a commnent and checking to see if my library has it. I am reading Artemis by Andy Wier. Someone recommended his Project Hail Mary but it was checked out. So far I am enjoying Artemis. Now, back to reading the comments for more book suggestions!

    ReplyDelete
  52. P.S. Our library has the book you recommended so I am excited to try it. I have it on hold.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I have read at least 118 books this year (reading digitally - my reader keeps track), not counting the 'real' ones. How to pick a favorite??? Each one is a separate adventure into new worlds.

I love those batiks!! What a nice give away.

    :) Linda

  54. Love the Miamas quilt - dark turquoise binding, please. I don’t generally reread books, but “The Art of Racing in the Rain” did deserve and get get a second reading from me. Brenda

  56. Thank you for the book recommendation--I'm an avid reader and a library volunteer. Your blog is one of my favorites (I'm sorry that I'm not good about leaving comments), and I'm thankful that you share your work, thoughts and sense of humor. I love to read a blog that makes me smile--that's what you, Paul and your blog do for me :).

    ReplyDelete
  57. That is quite a fun quilt of many colors! The book recommendation intrigues me, so I'm putting it on hold at the library.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks for perking me up today. I love your scrap vortex quilts and this one is no exception. I've started one several times, but I think my scrap pieces are too small and no where as lively as yours. My favorite book this year was Louise Penny's latest Inspector Gamache book "The Madness of Crowds". I just reviewed my 2021 book list on Goodreads and I'm sad to say I don't even remember what some of them were about. I'm adding your selection to my list. Enjoy your visit with your Mom. I hope all your travel goes smoothly.

  59. This quilt is BEAUTIFUL. Your mom will love it AND 'think' my daughter is so talented! My favorite book of 2021 is The Madness of Crowds for escapist reading but The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is my favorite for thinking and talking and believing.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The Dutch House. Great Book.
I love your quilts, sense of humor and how you relate to your husband. Priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Gosh! One could sit and 'read' that quilt, never mind a book. It's a great super-power you have to put odd squares together. I look at your photos and think I have it figured out, but it never works. Fav book read this year (out of a couple hundred): The Widow Nash by Jamie Harrison. Your recommendation is now on my list....you sold me!

    ReplyDelete
  62. This book will now jump ahead in my TBR list. Thank you for your story too! I love the idea of quilts telling stories. I’ve been trying to pass on my ‘stories’ to my grandchildren lately also.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Lots of inspiration! I’m going to buy the book and need to make a quilt with all of my novelty print scraps now-such a very fun quilt. As for the binding, I like the lighter shade of turquoise. My favorite book this year is Amy Tan’s Where The Past Begins.

    ReplyDelete
  64. My favorite book this year? It absolutely has to be the one I'm just finishing - All American Christmas by Rachel Campos-Duffy and Sean Duffy. I love all the contributors' stories and pictures. I think I will have to pass it on to someone else to share the warmth and joy.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The Lost Manuscript by Cathy Bonidan is a great read. I too enjoyed My Grandmother . . .Your quilt is wonderful. It is so cool when the scraps come together like yours do!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Love your new quilt. It would be fun to cuddle and look at all the little pieces. As for the book I liked the best this year, I can’t find the name of it. Bummer but I read every day so I finish a lot of books every year. I’m going to add the The Queen's Secret… historical fiction. I also found David Rosenfelt books on audio this year. Criminal defense attorney with an attitude and who doesn’t really want or need to work. Dog lover so every book has a dog character too. Great to listen to while sewing — entertaining me mostly light hearted. Lovely batiks you're sharing. When do you go to India? Soon or ?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh, Preeti -- Miamas is another scrappy beauty. How do you do it?? And of course I'd love to enter the giveaway. I liked My Grandmother. I haven't read Bakman's latest yet. As you know I always have a book or two to recommend....my FAVORITE for this year? I'd have to say Early Morning Riser by Katherine Heiny.

    ReplyDelete
  68. What a beautiful quilt! And I just ordered the book from my local bookstore. My current favorite is Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey with Stanley Tucci's Taste as a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh my gosh - I love the quilt and the way you named it. Very cool to see scraps I sent to you in the quilt. This is why I send you scraps - you create wonderful things with them! I did read this book and just loved it. As for other favorite books - I read Cold Sassy Tree this year (by Olive Ann Burns) and it is wonderful. Also read The Tattoist of Auschwitz which is very very good, tho not a light read. Four Winds, by Kristin Hannah was another very good one. (I am moving and have too much fabric to pack so please do not enter me in the giveaway.)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Is the book for kids or adults? Any book with the word “turds” in it would appeal to my grands. We played Boggle with them over the weekend and one set of letters yielded “turd” as well as other giggle-inducing words of the same category. We were all laughing so hard we could hardly continue. Anyway, fun quilt as usual!! You have such a gift for wildly scrappy quilts. For the binding, my preference is the darker turquoise. I like both with the lovely backing, but I wonder if the lighter turquoise would fade out a bit with the more saturated colors in the front. Just my little opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I loved that book! I ripped right through it, and might have to read it again. My favorites this year were Dear Mrs Bird by AJ Pearce; The Year of Pleasures by Elizabeth Berg; and Did You Ever Have a Family by Bill Clegg. All very different, all great reads!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Sounds like a wonderful book. Thanks for sharing your quilt on Wednesday Wait Loss. I bet your mom will love it.

  73. Have a good trip to your family. Love the quilt, have a few of my own scrappies going together. Stay safe and sew on !! Best book , Touched by Magic! Unique spin on Barbering!

  74. Oh, I'm sure you will enjoy your trip home that will certainly be filled with hugs, kisses and love! Your gift for your precious Mama is beautifully created and offers up multiple venues of conversation starters! I am a fan of Backman and am looking forward to reading My Grandmother Told Me To Tell You She's Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  75. That book sounds fascinating - I will get a hold of it as soon as possible. I haven't read much this year - January 6 destroyed my reading mojo for months. But one I did read is "The Hate U Give." It's teen fiction (that adults could/should read too) about a police shooting of a Black teenager, from the perspective of the girl who was with him and witnessed it. My high school daughter was reading it for English class, and I wanted to have an informed discussion with her about it so I read it too.

Also, your quilts are always awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That's a super quilt for your mother, and the story of how it got it's name is fascinating. In the 1980's there was a UK television series shown here, which my children loved, "Adventures of a Super-Gran", which your excerpt reminded me of.
The book I read this year which impressed me most wasn't published this year, but two years ago: "Girl, Woman, Other" by Bernadine Evaristo. It describes the intertwined lives of twelve fictious women whose lives are very different, but who share one constant factor: their colour. I think all women can relate to the characters; I wonder how women of colour relate to the story. I found it enlightening.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Preeti, you did it again! I love this quilt and am in awe of your ability to put scraps together so beautifully. It’ll be such a perfect snuggle quilt. My favorite book this year is Have You Seen Luis Velez? by Catherine Hyde. I’m copying the book suggestions from everyone because I love adding to my list of books to read. Have a wonderful visit home, and please take lots of pictures to share. Happy Everything! PS. I’m overflowing with fabric, so please, if I win anything, give it to someone more deserving.

  78. A spectacular scrappy finish! I adore it and feel inspired to dig into my scraps to see if a quilt like this could emerge!
