Mom asked me to make a quilt for a young girl. Of course I said yes.
What is her name, I asked. She did not know.
How old, I enquired. Not sure, she replied.
Orange, Pink and Sparkly |
At this point, I gave up. There is only so much eye-rolling I can do. I set about picking fabrics. Since I knew nothing about the recipient, my aim was to please my mother.
I chose a simple block using cream, pink and orange fabrics.
Design Wall |
Me: Some little girl in India...
Paul: Do you know her?
Me: All I know is that her father helped mom with some hard to find medications.
Paul: That is it?
Me: Mom wants to express her gratitude.
Paul: So she asked you...
Me: From across the Atlantic Ocean...
Paul: Are you going to mail it to India?
Me: No, just to Pennsylvania.
Paul: Your sister is going to India?
Me: Yes. End of October.
I have been hoarding this elephant fabric since 2016, I think. I know Mom will love it. In fact, Paul loves it too and has asked me to make him a pillow (he already has mug rugs and zippered pouches) from the remaining 16". That is a separate project and blogpost. Insert eye-roll here.
Here is the finished quilt.
Tesu |
I have named her Tesu. Tesu is the Hindi name for the Butea Monosperma flower. Tesu finished at 43" square. The block is made up of 5" squares framed with 2.5" strips.
Here are some close-up shots.
I especially enjoyed working on her after completing the much complicated Radiance.
I will be sharing with all my favorite linky parties. See full list on the sidebar.
The next Island Batik project is sponsored by Bags by Annie. I am making Room with a View in three sizes.

Paul: We are hosting our next gaming session. Right?
Me: Yes.
Paul: What are you making?
Me: Chicken Biryani
Paul: Will I be able to eat it?
Me: Yes. I will adjust the ingredients.
Paul: Do you use a rotisserie chicken?
Me: No, I will use drumsticks.
Paul: Bone-in?
Me: Yes. Very much so. The bone keeps the meat moist. Also, dark meat is more flavorful. I never cook with breasts.
Paul (smiling naughtily): Babe, you always cook with breasts!!!
What a generous thing for you to do considering the miles the quilt needs to travel. But I very much understand the desire to thank someone with more than words and you're wonderful to help your mom in this way. I'm sure it will be loved. And that fabric for the back - I'm not sure I would want to part with it either!
ReplyDeleteThigh meat or drumsticks all the way! Lovely quilt.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt design is perfect to display these beautiful fabrics! The elephant backing fabric so so lovely. Your mother will be very pleased, so will the girl whatever age she is, happy stitching!

ReplyDeleteTest is a beautiful quilt, Preeti - bright and happy! I love the colors and that elephant backing is perfect. (I would want a pillow out of it, too, Paul!) That is so kind and generous of you to make a quilt your mom asked for, without much info to go on.
ReplyDeleteYou created a beautiful quilt. And your hubby wins as well!
ReplyDeletePink and orange always go so well together, and I love how they shine in this quilt. The elephants are so beautiful! I'm sure your mom will love it and will be proud to pass this sparkly gem onto her benefactor's daughter. Think of how much she will beam when she says "my daughter in America made it!"
ReplyDeleteTesu is beautiful-the striped binding was inspired! Your Mom will be thrilled and proud.
ReplyDeleteThat Paul of yours is certainly a keeper!

ReplyDeleteYour Tesu quilt is beautiful -- you have such a good eye for combining colors and fabric prints. And yes, the elephant backing fabric is delightful! Paul has good taste in fabric (AND women).
ReplyDeleteI love Tesu -- first the block is one of my go to for fast, fun quilts. It shows off your fabric choices wonderfully. (I'm gushing a bit here but can I say, I really like your newest quilt.) The backing is perfect; and don't forget that wonderful binding. Gold stars to you on a great finish.
ReplyDeleteI love it - a beautiful finish. A great design to let the fabric sparkle. I am sure a girl in India will be delighted to receive it!
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely quilt and will be well loved!
ReplyDeleteIt must have been so hard to make a quilt for someone you know nothing about. But you went with your instinct and the result is a gorgeous quilt I'm sure she'll love! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Well done Preeti
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely quilt! I'm sure any girl would love to have this as a gift!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun finish! I think you did a great choice choosing fitting fabrics for the new owner - they all read India-inspired to me. Though I do think I saw one Alison Glass fabric in there? The binding is also very cool! I do love a stripe ;) I am sure it will be love but do hope it will get there safely! xo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt and the combination of fabrics/color are perfect for a girl no matter what age!
