Paul: Yes.
Me: Now meet Dashing Doors!
Dashing Doors is my response to the Island Batik's Log Cabin Challenge and Blog Hop that begins today. My pun on Door Dash got a huge eye roll from Paul :-)
I received a half-yard bundle of Breezy Collection. Purples, Greens, Coral and Pink make this a lovely collection.
An original collection by Kate Colleran Designs, Breezy is a bright collection with a beautiful gradation of values and I wanted to show off that aspect of the collection.
Light to Dark! |
EQ8 Mock-up |
Here are some process pictures, showing green, coral, purple and pink doors.
Making Doors |
My colors!!! |
I used Aurifil Thread for piecing (50 wt) and quilting (40 wt). I used a 80/12 Microtex Needle from Schmetz for both piecing and quilting. The batting is Hobbs Tuscany Cotton-Wool Blend.
I chose a dark purple (Boysenberry) backing from Island Batik Basics and the binding is Light Grey Solid.
Here are some pictures from the photoshoot.

What door will you pick? |
Rock Star Backing and Binding :-) |
It is a Sunny Vibe! |
No arguments from me :-) |
Of course you want to see close-ups. Of course I will.
Juicy |
Walking Foot Quilting |
Labelled |
Once Dashing Doors was completed, I started tidying up the scraps. There were several 3.5" and 2.5" strip segments left over. The work was done. May I play?
I am allowed? Right? So I did.
Here is the result of playing with scraps left over from Dashing Doors. Meet Aprajita.
Aprajita |
The blocks in Aprajita are 7" by 12". The quilt finished at 42" by 48". I did not design Aprajita in EQ8. But it is not an improv quilt either. It is really a design-build project :-)
Work in Progress |
Using the scraps, I designed three types of blocks, each measuring 7" by 12". Then I made a few of them and added to the design wall. To prevent the project from getting out of control, I decided that I would limit myself to the scraps leftover from Dashing Doors, but it was acceptable to add neutral (Almond) and coordinating solids.
Design Wall |
Aprajita uses the following Island Batik Solids - Dark Grey, Red, Fuchsia, Pink, Lime Green, Amethyst, and Orange. Each solid is used once.
A second finish!!! |
Walking Foot Quilting |
If I love Dashing Doors, I am completely besotted with Aprajita. She is fun and modern and so cheerful. She has this intimate, minimalist wedding in a botanical garden vibe about her. How do I capture all that in a name?
You are my sunshine! |
I chose Aprajita because it is the name of a flower that is usually purple but also comes in pink and coral colors. Aprajita flowers not only embody the spirit of Spring but are also considered auspicious and used as offerings in prayers.
I used Aurifil Thread for piecing (50 wt) and quilting (40 wt). I used a 80/12 Microtex Needle from Schmetz for both piecing and quilting. The batting is Thermore by Hobbs.I chose Platinum (Island Batik Neutral) for backing and the binding is Fuchsia Solid.
Cheerful! |
Ah Spring! |
Me: I was. I am.
Paul: But you made two...
Me: I did
Paul: How?
Me: Let's see. When you are too tired from working you go play...
Paul: Yes
Me: But you work and play at the computer...
Paul: Two different computers, but yes.
Me: In this case both work and play happened at the sewing machine and resulted in two quilts.
Paul: I see.
Me: Thank you for the photo shoot!
Paul: Oh you are very welcome.
Me: Silver Diner?
Paul: Sounds good.
What sounds good to me is a comment from you. And if you tell me which of the following Island Batik collections you like the most, I will enter your name for a chance at a giveaway (Island Batik fabric packs). I will pick two winners on February 13, 2024.

Monarch might be my favorite collection, but you’ve made a good argument for and a beautiful quilt from Breezy’
ReplyDeleteThis is a great way to use the batiks.. Lovely idea for a variation on a log cabin. They do look like doors. And the backing colour is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThe second quilt is a bonus. Using your scraps to make it was perfect. (Karen - karen@sunburntquilts.com.au)
Awesome! I love it, both are so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLove your challenge quilt but I am head-over-heels with your playful quilt. Really turned out fun and both show off the fabrics beautifully!
ReplyDeleteI don’t know what is happening with blogger and commenting lately. My name is Heather and I blog on hubblebirdsquilt.blogspot.com. Not anonymous! I have a quilt on my bucket list from Andover quilts. It’s foundation paper pieced, and uses a vast array of graded colours. I’m not good at choosing random fabrics to colour coordinate in such a complex manner. And I don’t use batiks. Would you recommend a range like this to create such a colour gradation? The reason I ask is because I want to spend a limited budget wisely. Thanks for any advice you provide.
ReplyDeleteOh, and for some reason, I actually prefer your second quilt, even though I like both. Maybe it’s because I like the variation in sizes of blocks and the lighter background. I know this is an illusion. Both quilts are gorgeous. . It’s kind of mystifying to me because I’m not generally a fan of ‘modern’ quilts. Who knows what grips us about art - place, time, mood, treading the path. Great work!
DeleteMore lovely quilts! I like the value gradation in the door quilt Flutter wings or fairy floss are my favorites.
DeleteI love both of your playful quilts, Preeti! What a beautiful fabric collection. I need to get some of that! Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and colorful quilts Preeti! That collection makes me think of Spring.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilts! I like the colors in both and your quilting finishes them nicely.
ReplyDeleteTwo more great quilts! I like Zen Funk :)
ReplyDeleteYep, you hit it out of the park with your TWO quilts, Preeti! The name Aprajita is beautiful as I think I also embody the spirit of spring! It can't come soon enough for me. I really like the new collection of Squiggles, Dots and Lines..it seems to be something really different for Island Batik fabrics. *Paul does have excellent taste!
ReplyDeleteLove those quilts and Island batik colours! I think I like squiggles, dots, and etc. joanne
ReplyDeletethanks for the chance to win I like "Love & Peace" and "Squiggles &Lines" Your quilt is wonderful and I like the way you quilt - them nice and simple letting the colors and the piecing be the star of the show
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you quilted with your walking foot!
I like Love and Peace, Romance Garden and Fairy Floss batiks.
I love both quilts and the names explained. Great ideas and fabric creativity.
ReplyDeleteBoth of these quilts are gorgeous, Preeti! You knocked it out of the park again with not one, but TWO quilts! LOL Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI love your interpretation of the project. It's beautiful. It's so hard to pick a favorite collection, but I think I'll go with Heavy Metal.
ReplyDeleteBoth quilts are fun, but Aprajita is my favorite of the two. Squiggles, Dots and Lines is my favorite out of the collections. Looking forward to seeing your red RSC blocks. You've got a great set of reds to work with.
ReplyDeleteI like both quilts but the Aprajita is my favorite. I love the cool color of the Fairy Floss collection. You’ve got a nice stack of red fabrics. I’ve started working on mine and I seem to have lots of strips.
ReplyDeleteOne thing is always certain - I love your quilt designs, Preeti! Dashing Doors features all those pretty colors of your fabric perfectly. I like the way you used the solids in Aprajita, too. I think I like Breezy the best because it really does make you feel like you're in a beautiful garden!
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are beautiful! Love what you did.
ReplyDeleteGreat designs! I like the Aprajita best
ReplyDeleteHeavy Metal is my favorite collection.
ReplyDeleteTwo beautiful quilts that both use a log cabin style block. I really love that Dashing Doors has light to dark and dark to light colorways.
ReplyDeleteHeavy Metal is my favorite, but not by much. The collections shown are so pretty. Both of your quilts are wonderful and I can't seem to choose which one I like best. -- tnjmom1 at gmail dot com

ReplyDeletecshelleyqbq (at) gmail (dot) com
The choice of log cabin variation and fabrics work so beautifully together! Aprajita is such a lovely and unexpected bonus quilt. I don't think you could make a quilt that wasn't joyous and we treasure you for that.
ReplyDeleteZen funk is a quirky collection, but I'm taken with Local Motion, too.
What beautiful quilts! My favorite is Breezy, as I love trees & leaves. The wavy quilting adds a wonderful touch to a quilt! Thanks for the chance at the giveaway! Deb Enders mdenders@msn.com
ReplyDeleteSuch creative quilts! I guess my favorite collection would be "Fairy Floss" This blog wouldn't let me use my name, so email is diantha.howard@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are great! Like the Aprajita one best. It's so fun to see what can be done with leftovers. It's a tough decision on a favorite. It's between monarch and woodstock with a heavier lean toward woodstock I think.
ReplyDeleteI really like both of your quilts but would pick Aprajita as my favorite. You really got my attention when you quilted it with your walking foot. You do beautiful work. It is really difficult to choose a favorite collection, the colors in Love and Peace keep me going back to that collection. Have a good evening!
ReplyDeleteWow. What a nice set of fabrics. But, I really love the color wave of their solids.
ReplyDeleteI love your Breezy fabrics, but I really would love to try Zen Funk. Two quilts, that's fantastic, and so beautiful. And I love the conversation between you and your husband. It always makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteOh I love them both! There is no way I can pick one. Waiting for you to paint the world red!
ReplyDeleteBoth of your quilts are absolutely gorgeous and I love the fabrics---sooo beautiful!. I think my favorite is Flutter Wings. Thank you for the chance to win your giveaway.

ReplyDeleteI love Fairy Floss! Virginiaracefan (at) Verizon (dot) net
ReplyDeleteLove them both!!
ReplyDeleteI really like the Fairy Floss, but so many of them are beautiful and I always enjoy seeing the projects made from each collection.
ReplyDeleteI love both of your quilts and I really love how happy they make you. That’s so important. I usually love my most recent quilt the most and want to hang on to it for at least a few months before I’m ready to give it away.
ReplyDeleteI think I like Breezy the most. It might primarily be because I’ve just seen it in such pretty quilts, while all the others are just strips of fabric, but that’s OK.
I look forward to seeing what you make with those luscious reds..
charlotta58@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteLove both of your quilts! All the collections are beautiful, but since I have to choose one I will choose Squiggles, Dots and Lines.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I love both these quilts. hard to know which choose between them, but I do think I like something about Door Dash...a kind of illusion of doors and going into a hall of doors and a row of doors. I also love Aprajita and that you just built it from the scraps. So cool. Now favorite fabric...I would say Heavy Metal calls my name!
ReplyDeleteSquiggles, dots and lines looks like a fun collection!
ReplyDeleteI would choose Breezy and Squiggles, Dots and Lines. Thanks for the opportunity to win a pkg. I love both of your quilts. They make me think I could do either of these patterns..
ReplyDeleteI love that your play resulted in such a stunning quilt! If I must choose, I would say that Heavy Metal could add some masculine to the very feminine quilt I have planned for my bed.
ReplyDeleteI am squealing because both these quilts are so luscious. I love them both! And Dashing Doors-- LOL!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Fairy Floss. I do love your variation of a log cabin quilt it turned out beautiful. It also looks like a fun quilt to make.

ReplyDeleteZen funk would be such fun to work with to make a special quilt!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilts! I like the Heavy Metal Collection the most!
ReplyDeletenikilsend(at)outlook(dot)com
Oooooh, lovely quilts, both of them! I'm in love with the door with the pink center, and how fun, you made a focus right on the block of Aprajita (love the name) that caught my eye, the green one! Breezy is a wonderful fabric collection, Heavy Metal looks fabulous too ;)

Sue. Sad (at) sad.lerch.family
You've made such great use of gorgeous batiks! Aprajita is my favorite quilt. I love how the light background makes the bright colors POP. Like Sharon, Kim, and Julie, Heavy Metal is my favorite collection.
ReplyDeleteoh I like Fairy Floss and Flitter Wings - love the quilts as usual!
ReplyDeleteOh my - both quilt designs are amazing! I love them. Each fabric collection is so pretty, but I'm totally fascinated by that black and white collection because it's so unique.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the batik bundles I like Fairy Frost the best.
ReplyDeleteLove Dashing Doors.....also love the play on words
ReplyDeleteHi Preeti! Greetings from Baltimore 🙂 I love both quilts, and always find your ability to conjure two very different out of a single fabric line quite impressive. As for favorite fabric line, I am definitely drawn toward the bright colors of Flutter Wings.
ReplyDeleteGreat fabrics and designs
ReplyDeleteGood grief -- those are both great quilts. I think I like Aprajita the most. Or maybe Dashing Doors or Aprajita... they are both wonderful. If I can barely choose a favorite from two wonderful quilts how do I choose a favorite from a multitude of batik loveliness. Ok, I'm settling on Fairy Floss or, maybe ....
ReplyDeleteMy favorite collection is Flutter Wings. Thanks for the chance to win.
