Hansel & Gretel

These are quilts 7 and 8 from the Festival quilts.

Shopping online on, I came across a beautiful bundle of 1 yard cuts, at an unbelievable price.  Eleven 1-yard cuts for under $50.  Yes, please.  Eight were monochromes and then there were three that had multicolored hexies.

1 yard cuts = Yumminess
I do not see myself making paper pieced hexies. Therefore, as soon as I saw the fabrics, I had this "brilliant" idea.  Why do anything?

Do nothing?
Ok, well a little something - like add a matching/contrasting border.
The result?

Hansel and Gretel were born.

Hansel is characterized by navy blue.
Navy blue border for Hansel brought out the boyish charm of the pattern.

Of course Gretel has pink and orange.  An orange border seemed just right for Gretel - feminine enough without being too girly pink.

The best part of these twins is the quilting.  I used the hexies to guide my curved quilting lines.

For Hansel I chose a navy blue owls backing fabric.

Navy & Lime Owls
For Gretel, it had to be this bright floral.  This is the brightest fabric in my stash.

Super Bright Floral
Magically, a lime green binding worked well for both sides of both quilts.  That is pretty amazing!!!

Perfectly Matched!!!

Kay fell in love with Gretel and bought it for her granddaughter.  Hansel went to Sean, the grandson of a friend.

How can something that is so easy and so simple look so pretty and adorable?
I am positive that the quilting gods were smiling upon me :-)

Will I make these quilts again?  Absolutely.  I so loved this idea that I went and bought 1.5 yards of each of these two fabrics from  Who knows, I might need to make one tomorrow.

Cheating never felt better!!!
Yes, I made a Hexie Quilt ;-)

If this post has brightened your day or given you any ideas, please do let me know.  Because, when I hear from you, it brightens my day!!!

  1. Wonderful idea. Both quilts are adorable.

  2. I also wanted to say that we all need a cheater project every now and then..

  3. Once again you have shown great creativity doesn't have to be labor intensive. Good job!

  4. Love the way your backing and binding coordinate so perfectly with each hexie fabric! Very nice way to use it in quilts Preeti!

  5. Very cute. Cheater fabric at its finest.

  6. I love that statement. Do nothing. They look great!

  7. ¡Preciosos quits! I love them!

  8. These are really cute, looks like you got your monies worth from just these two finishes! They look so bright and happy:)

  9. What great fabrics. You made great quilts. I really like the green binding. Thanks for linking up to TGIFF.

  10. Both quilts are beautiful, and that lime green binding really is perfect for both!

  11. My type of hexies! nice quick finish. A great idea when you want to give a gift but where a long labour of love is not what you have in mind (or time for). Great colour choices for the borders.

  12. They are gorgeous and surely brightened my evening. I have a fat quarter set of these fabrics. I love them. Have not decided what I will do with them. Maybe a bow tuck bag will do.

  13. These turned out so fun and bright!

  14. Your fabric has me fooled, I thought it was EPP! I love Hansel, my favorite colors and lovely owls to top it off! :)

  15. Very sneaky... and lovely! I particularly love the navy, lime, red, orange, grey colour pathway. And so much easier than piecing an entire quilt of hexies!

  16. Fabulous, and such a simple idea! They look so good together, it must have been a wrench to split them up. :)

  17. Sometimes the fabric does all the work! What a great way to use these wonderful prints.

  18. The "cheats hexi".....I love it....I should look for this fabric as I haven't made it onto the hexi bus yet!
ps....I also think the Hansel owl backing is divine! Fabulous Job on both quilts!

  19. Great idea for simple but beautiful quilts! Both color schemes are perfect and the backing for Greta is just perfectly fun for a girl.

  20. I love simple quilts, and these are super cute! Plus, I'm happy to hear they both have a home.

  21. What a fast and fabulous finish times TWO!! Love the simplicity of these and their cheery colours. Yay, that they are already sold. Love both of the backings too, and the lime green-icing on the cake. :-)

  22. You had me fooled! But what a pleasant surprise... Both quilts are fabulous with just the right backing fabrics and binding. Of course you know I love that wavy line quilting!

  23. The Hexie shape is just the best! Thank you for your very kind words over on my blog ; )

  24. Ya got me too. I thought, OMG, Preeti made a hexie quilt. I have bags of Hexies made but just can't find the time to sew them together but want to make a hexie quilt. I didn't know this fabric existed. I am going to go get some.
