Bruised August

August is almost over and I am relieved.  It has been difficult and yet I feel guilty dwelling upon my insignificant issues when the country is aflame, while some of us look away and others fan the flames of unrest.

Fabric Selection

I feel beaten and bruised even when I have no visible scars.
The color for Rainbow Scrap Challenge August 2020 is reminiscent of just that - a bruise.

In progress

Here are my completed Picket Star Quilt Blocks for August 2020.

Java Plum
Paul: Purple?
Me: I call it Plum. Java Plum to be exact.

Paul: This has to be purple?
Me: No it is Eggplant.

Paul: Is this purple?
Me: Geranium is a better description.
Paul: I didn't know Geranium was a color.
Me: That is Kona for you.
Paul: What is Kona?
Me: Kona is a manufacturer of solid fabrics.

I showed him the shade card booklet.

Paul: So all these names are coming from the shade card?
Me: No, they don't have all the colors.
Paul: Are you claiming that you know more than them?
Me: I grew up eating Java plums (jamuns).  They didn't.

Paul: What about this?
Me: Periwinkle.
Paul (mildly shocked): That is not even in the shade card!
Me (mildly amused): I know. It is exasperating. I have to do their work for them.

Paul: What are you calling this one?
Me: I am calling it Mauve.
Paul: According to the shade card it is half dahlia and half magenta.
Me: Um Hm. Should I call it Dagenta or Maglia?

RSC Blocks for August 2020

Paul: What do you have against purple?
Me: It is the color of a bruise. And I feel bruised and sad.

Old Picture of Jonesie and Paul = Perfect Harmony

Paul hugged me. He understood.
We are mourning the passing of our cat Jonesie and his absence hurts like a bruise.

Here are the blocks for Project 2 of the RSC 2020.

For RSC 2020 Project #2

Such fun blocks

Cute Owl

Do you see the Geranium now?

Thank you for all of your kind comments on the Sisterhood quilt.  The random number generator chose #45. Roseanne of Home Sewn With Us is the winner. An email is on its way.  I am sure that the six sisters will be welcomed in her studio.

  1. I'm so sorry about the loss of Jonesie, Preeti. What a sweet photo of Jonesie and Paul. Hugs.

  2. Thanks for sharing your humorous conversation! It gave me a good chuckle this morning. I heart your blocks. And color names. I'm sorry about Jonesie. Hugs.

  3. I'm sorry purple makes you feel sad. I wonder if it's de colour itself, or its associations with the current wave of unrest in the US. I feel for you living close to such extreme levels of violence; levels that, from where I stand (in Europe), seem totally unnecessary.
You may have been feeling sad this week, but you've made some lovely picket star blocks.

  4. As always your conversations with Paul make me smile! And today you have given a name to my feelings lately! Bruised! DH asked me, just yesterday if I was alright! I said not really, but couldn’t define it, thank you!
I send you hugs. We lost our cat in April and there are still mornings I look for him to see if wants breakfast!

  5. That's a great way to describe it-- it has indeed been bruising. But your blocks are lovely and happy, and give us a bit of a lift. In the picture with the overlapped Picket Star blocks, the outer blocks look like butterflies. Another happy accident. Be well, friend.

  6. I'm so sorry to hear about Jonesie, Preeti. Losing our furry family members really hurts. Your conversation with Paul about all the purples is so true to life - there a lot of purples out there. I personally have never seen a purple geranium! Love your blocks whatever color they are!

  7. Your picket Star blocks are so lovely. You have the most gorgeous fabrics! Many years ago, DH BRuce was introduced to the young daughter of a co-worker. The little girl said “Bruce? I have a bruce too!”, and she pointed to a bruise on her shin. Hugs to you and Paul as you continue to mourn the loss of Jonesie. Losing a companion (of any species) does leave a hole. Maybe you will be in a position down the road to rescue another little heart and in turn be rescued too! xo

  8. we had similar discussions today as I was trying to choose some green wool to knit with, and tone it in with pink. Pear green, lime green, hot pink, berry pink. My husband said, why don't they have numbers, well they do but the names are more fun. I am sorry about the loss of your pet, it is always heartbreaking.

  9. Simply gorgeous fabrics you put together in your blocks..just definitely "plummy" ;)))
    Hugs, julierose

  10. You rocked the PURPLE blocks for the RSC (in spite of feeling sad and bruised!) Sending quilty hugs on the passing of your dear kitty, Preeti.

  11. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your fur-baby. I know too well how hard that is (still grieving hard for one we lost last October!), but you shouldn't feel like your grief isn't earned. Despite all that is going on in the world, your pain is real, too. Perhaps more significant to you, too, since it is directly your pain. (But that does not diminish the pain of others, either!) As for purples, I love them. And the conversation with your hubby is great. Mine would just have rolled his eyes about more quilt stuff, so it's fun to hear about those with spouses who are more willing to be involved. (He's supportive, but more in the I-don't-mind-you-spending-money-on-quilt-stuff-so-long-as-the-real-bills-continue-to-be-paid sort of way!)

  12. ooooooo nooooo losing your little friend and companion is so bad. I know hearts can heal but meanwhile there is a big hole where jonesie was. I know. hugs to you and Paul. I did enjoy your color class... and periwinkle winking at me, your lovely blocks that make me want to make them too. Love, LeeAnna

  13. So sorry that you are hurting from the loss of your kitty. I lost my pet 20 years ago, and it still brings tears to my eyes when I think of him. Hugs.
The block is so pretty and the overlapping layout is fabulous!

  14. I’m sorry for your loss of Jonesie, Preeti. It is definitely okay to mourn your personal losses regardless of whatever else is going on right now. I can see how that made you feel like your purples were bruises. Purple was my favorite color throughout my youth. Now, inexplicably, it is one of my least-owned colors. But, oh how I love color names. They are so evocative!! Much more exciting than plain old color names. Your blocks are all exquisite, once again. And your colorful backgrounds—I aspire to such colorful low-volume fabrics.

  15. Thank you so much, Preeti! It's just the kind of news I needed after working 4 hours today - I sure didn't want to. Now my mind is spinning with International Sister blocks-to-be. I am sorry to hear about Jonesie passing. Our little furry friends leave big, fabulous paw prints on our hearts and in our lives that can never be replaced yet never forgotten either. {{Hugs}} a bunch for you. Purple is a bruise color, and rather fitting for you today. It's also the color of royalty and the perfect blend of blue and red in varying quantities. And it's a color included in a rainbow - not all colors can have that distinction. More {{Hugs}} for you and Paul. ~smile~ Roseanne

  16. Love all the color name in your conversation! I am so sorry for the loss of your furry friend. They are such a big part of our lives. Big hugs to you.

  17. I am so sorry about the loss of your kitty. I know too well how these furry family members get into our lives and become sooo important to us. I never thought of purple as being the color of a bruise. I do love those color names on the kona swatches. Some of them crack me up while others just don't work at all. It's all so subjective isn't it? The one thing I don't like is that Kona Kaufman snow is not the same as Moda Bella snow. Why not use a different name if you're a competing solid fabric company? Oh well! I hope, when the time is right, you will add another furry kitten to your family. Any cat would be lucky to live with you and your quilty gang!

  18. Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your furry family member. What a lucky kitty to have spent his life in your care. What a perfect color for your August.

  19. I always admire the beautiful blocks and quilts you make and share and your conversations with Paul make me smile. ((hugs)) from across the pond.

  20. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Jonesie, our furry family members leave a huge whole in our hearts. Sending hugs ❤. Your blocks this month are beautiful and I have really enjoyed your colour names conversation with Paul.

  21. I love reading the conversations you have with Paul. ☺ Your blocks look great. Sorry to hear about your cat. ♥

  22. I'm sending a socially distanced virtual hug to you and Paul on the passing of Jonesie. Pets become part of the family and it's so hard when we have to let them go. I'd have to disagree with Kona on the geranium and periwinkle names for purple shades, but whatever they are called, your picket fence blocks are lovely. Stay away from the news for a while and get out to absorb some of nature's amazing sights.

  23. We usually understand the passing of people from our lives, but the departure of our fur friends.....very hard. I think I've lost count of how many await me at the Rainbow Bridge. I now have my fourth "Jonesie" and scold him when he's not here when I expect him.

And I agree on the 'bruises' and our country.

I had to think a while on the 'geranium' and the only one that came to mind is a Martha Washington geranium. They are usually more in the red/coral/pink/white area of the color card.

    Take care.

  24. Sending you orange, brilliant blue and yellow Indiana sunrise.

  25. I'm so sorry about Jonesie. Yet your RSC blocks are the most beautiful "bruises" I've ever seen. Perhaps when more time has passed, you will see them as plums again instead of as injuries. Hugs to both of you.

  26. Those picket fence blocks are all lovely no matter the colour.

  27. All you blocks are so pretty but I am really drawn to your picket star blocks. I'm so sorry about you & Paul losing Jonsie. That is one sweet picture and now I truly understand all the "bruising" you & Paul are feeling. ((hugs))

  28. I am so sorry for the loss of Jonsie, hugs to you both. Try thinking of the color purple as a flower and let it uplift you because your blocks are pretty.

  29. So sorry about the loss of Jonsie. They do take a piece of our hearts when they leave us.

  30. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Jonesie, Preeti. Bruised sounds right. Love and hugs to you and Paul.

  31. You have come up with such a great group of names for various purples. My daughter-in-law once said she liked the colors of a bruise. Eek! But now I just think purple for her. I agree, we are bruised. So much is happening. Too much bad news. And, many of us don't leave the house much. My excitement today was to go to CVS to pick up prescriptions. Wow. I swung by Target to looking for something with no luck. Yea, not so exciting really. Take care.

  32. I am so sorry about your loss of Jonesie. Too much sadness, upheavel an nastiness during this time. I love purple, but your idea of it as a bruise is such a fitting description of our bruised year. Meanwhile, I am loving the name Dagenta and would name a male cat or dog that! of course Maglia would be perfect for a female. Ok, I think you have a new profession...naming colors.

  33. Aw, Jonesie, so sorry. They say to get back on a horse after it throws you, so you might consider getting another kitty to love you and you to love on. Love your conversation shares with Paul. And I too thank you for giving us a word to express how we are feeling at this time, bruised!

  34. Ooh, I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet must be hard, since he is a part of your family. I really like the picket star blocks.

  35. Your issues are most definitely not insignificant, my sweet dear. The loss of a pet causes a hole in our hearts that is deep and painful. I'm so very sorry for this great loss.
Hugs to you and your husband. May your bruises heal and your hearts find joy in your memories. Hugs.

  36. While I love the picket star blocks I am really drawn to all the blocks for project 2. The fabrics are glorious.

  37. I am so sorry to read about your loss! Many squishy virtual hugs for you xoxoxo

  38. I think we all are feeling a little bruised right now. Well, perhaps this whole year... What wonderful things you've done with your bruise colors! I love how the overlapping squares look a bit like butterflies. I, too, am sorry for the loss of your feline companion, and I wish you much joy in the coming weeks.

  39. So sorry about the loss of your kitty. No wonder purple is making you think of bruises.

  40. Oh hugs!! so sorry about your loss!!!! And the first sentence - a flames!! right? the fire near us just keeps growing ... its nuts!!

Love all your purples - and thank you for doing the color identity ;-) Hugs!
