Hunting for the Hunter (Green)

Here is a picture of my stash yardage - most of it at least.
Can you find Hunter Green?

No. Cause we don't get along.

I love the grassy greens of the fresh cut grass.
I love the fluorescent greens that sparkle.
I even love the jewel tones of the emerald green.
Bring me your Jade, Pea-Soup, Parrot, Peridot, Avocado, Lime and Apple greens.

But I draw the line at Hunter Green and Forest Green.  They are dark and depressing.
They are the colors of dangerous shadows lurking along the wooded path.
They are the colors of rotten spinach, sticky and stinky.

Paul: Hey you cannot just get rid of a color.
Me: No, I cannot. Clearly.
Paul: I am sure some people love dark green.
Me: I do too - in very small quantities.
Paul: Like how?
Me: Like this picture - just a wee bit in between the bright blooms.

Paul: So what are you complaining about?
Me: I am complaining about a whole month dedicated to Yucky/Mucky Green.
Paul: Looks like you completed the assignment.
Me: Of course, I did. I cannot whine about something I did not do.

At this point, Paul rolled his eyes very loudly and walked away.

When I was working on Mixed Feelings, I needed these greens - Hunter, Forest, and Pine.
Mari sent me a bulging envelope of dark green scraps so that I could complete the project.  I acquired a few darker greens when I was making the Bush Fire Blocks, to ensure the trees had the entire spectrum of values.

Thanks to Mari's scraps, leftovers from Bush Fire Blocks, freebies from the Guild Potluck Event (that may never happen again), and some fabrics that were part of FQ bundles, I had enough to address this month's RSC challenge.

And yet, I could not bring myself to look at these dark and depressing fabrics. So I resorted to the Oreo Cookie.  Oreo Cookie Approach to unpleasant issues, that is.  When you dislike something, sandwich it between two pleasant things.

To lessen the burden of dark greens, I played with my joyful (happy and bright) scrap vortex blocks before and after, like leaders and enders.  That pig is so cute.

In these dark times, do find something that brings you calm and joy - be it your favorite podcast, a few minutes of meditation, or a nature-walk.  Spring is in full-bloom and it is such a salve on frayed nerves. Just like I saw this month's RSC assignment through, we will get past these trying times.


While I was thinking about Mari, she was thinking about me.  This arrived in the mail last night.
My very large cup of scraps runneth over :-)

A mediocre songstress was surprised when someone in the crowd yelled ENCORE following her ho-hum performance.

By the time I got it right there were over 25 blocks. I figured I should make a few more.  I could definitely use the practice.

Paul is the model. In the picture below, Flimsy 2 can be seen on the right, trying to photobomb Flimsy 1.

In deference to Valentine's Day I added a tree of pink hearts to each flimsy.
Although I considered including a koala or a kangaroo but the idea seemed contrived and was therefore abandoned.


The dismal/depressing wintry landscape of my backyard is the perfect backdrop for these lively greens.

I am taking these with me to Quiltcon in Austin. I understand someone will be collecting the blocks and flimsies for the #BushFireBlocks.

Here are all the RSC blocks for February 2020. Since I love orange, I made not three but six large ones.

In other words, these oranges are so juicy that I could not contain all of it in four large blocks.
It happily spilled into two more blocks.  That is fine. I have a feeling I won't be making as many yellow or brown blocks.


And this is the second RSC project. This time my low-volume fabric has a little more zing to it.

No not a quilt...not even a flimsy.

But then scrap vortex is not a sprint. It is a marathon.  I chase a few scraps, corral them into a block or two and move on to the current project.

Stash Statement Blog Hop - Fire Pit

 Welcome to my turn on the Stash Statement Blog Hop.  Here is my version of Fire Pit.

I was thrilled when Kelly asked me to be a part of the blog hop. That was the easy part. But it was tricky to pick just one because there are several pretty quilts in this book.

I picked Fire Pit, because it is such a striking pattern. This pattern requires Tri-Rec rulers. I have had these rulers for a while but had not used them and this was the perfect opportunity.

Secondary Pattern - the Star

Kelly's new book - Stash Statement Quilts is all about Structured Improvisational Piecing. This means two things in this order (just my opinion)
1. Go crazy with your scraps (all shapes/sizes) and experiment with improv piecing
2. Rein it in with Kelly's techniques of structure (block creation methods)

THEN we get to the patchwork, followed by quilting and binding. 
I spent a whole month just making the blocks.  Why is that?
1. I chose a finer grain (smaller scraps)
2. I chose to make a twin bed size quilt instead of the lap size in the book.

Shall we start at the beginning?  I started with warm colors for the square blocks.

I made four blocks. I stepped away from the design wall to admire my handiwork. Looked good, but the block looked chunky.

So, I cut them up, and re-stitched to end up with a finer grain, so that the block was made up of several smaller pieces than a few large pieces.

I like this look much better. And the tone was set.

I was having so much fun that I ended up with way more blocks than required.

Is that a problem? Of course not.
I'll just make a larger quilt.

Next came the cool blocks, the triangles that required the tri recs ruler. Since this was my first time, I figured - let me make a couple of test blocks. When I placed the ruler/template on the improv slab, I realized that the ruler is bigger than the slab, by just a smidge.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH.

See, that is why you make audition blocks. I chose to cut the next slab a 1/4" larger, allowing some wiggle room.

42 blocks were arranged in a 6 by 7 grid, resulting in a flimsy that measured 72" by 84".

This is when I stretched the quilt (a little imagination and lots of scraps) by 3" on top and bottom to get a top measuring 72" by 90".

This was now a perfect size for a twin bed.   I chose this green wide backing to speed things up.

Quilted it simply with my walking foot and wavy line quilting. For binding I chose a striped brown fabric.

Does the striped binding on green background remind you of a snake in the grass?  Don't worry, I have tamed the beast :-)

Who is the boss now?

In the end, what you get out of it (life, school, workout etc.) depends on what you put into it. And for the six weeks that I put into making Fire Pit, I am thrilled about it.
