Quilters Unlimited Show 2019

The Quilt show was May 30 through June1, 2019.
I went to the quilt show with two of my non-quilty friends - Patsy and Sandy.  I know them from yoga classes and they are not quilters. This fact is important to the story that follows.

When we got to the "Trees of Life" quilt, I requested Patsy to take a picture of me with the quilt.
You know because a selfie would just not do it.

As I handed off my phone to Patsy, I noticed a couple of women walking towards us.
I went to stand next to the quilt and Patsy turned around and remarked to these women - My friend made this gorgeous quilt.
I blushed. The woman smiled, nodded and moved on.
My color deepened when I realized that Patsy had just addressed Jinny Beyer. It was just another day at the Quilt Show.

There is  something magical about the show.
I have made the quilt, photographed it and blogged about it but when I see it at the show, my heart skips a beat. Does this happen to you?

Here I am with "Mixed Feelings", happily reporting that all feelings are upbeat now.  The pain has receded into the dim caverns of my memory.

And lastly with Lo and Behold. Princess Bonniebella can be seen just over my shoulder and the Christmas tree plugged into the sunflower is just northeast of the princess.

This looks so Indian to me with red and yellow which are considered auspicious colors and are used to clothe the Goddess, as well as the patchwork design reminiscent of the Rangoli patterns.

I love the bicyclist and the teddy bear in the doorway. Fun details.

Susan is in my guild and her work never fails to impress.

So cute. Made me smile.

Spectacular. How do they make everything fit?  I am sure it is the magic of paper-piecing. Well-behaved paper-piecing, I guess.

 

I have seen this pattern before but not in solids.  I believe it is the black/white bands that add extra oomph.

 

The simplicity and straightforwardness of this quilt was very attractive to me. Fabric choices are important.

 

This intrigued me. I remember standing and staring it for a while to find all the embellishments she used.

 

And this small quilt was the show-stopper (in my opinion)

I returned from the show super happy and super exhausted.

Paul: Babe, are you ok?
Me: Yeah, why?
Paul: You seem subdued.
Me: The quilt show was fabulous.
Paul: And that has depressed you?
Me: No. Yes, in a way.
Paul: How so?
Me: Well, there are so many quilts to make and so little time
Paul: Ah OK. Well, are you going to finish this (pointing to the Trinket flimsy) one?
Me: I am not feeling it.
Paul: Whoa, What, Why?
Me: I completed every step, posted on Instagram religiously, sent an email for the finished top...
Paul: And?
Me: And I did not win.
Paul: Nothing?
Me: Absolutely nothing. I got oohs and aahs, nods and appreciation from other quilters but I wish I had also won something.
Paul: Was this like a lottery or a competition?
Me: Both. Well, first it was a weekly lottery and then it was the Grand Prize.
Paul: So who won?
Me: Bunch of people won. Not me.
Paul: Who won the grand prize?
Me: One very spectacular quilt - monochrome of blue and white. And another one had this very special layout where she made a picture or a landscape with these blocks.
Paul: So better quilts won.
Me: Some were better than mine. But mine is up there with the rest of the fancy ones.
Paul: Don't you have to finish this?
Me: Yes, but not this minute. It is not like I will get a prize for finishing it.
Paul: How about I give you a prize for finishing it.
Me: I am listening.
Paul: Gift Card to the Spa.
Me: I promise to complete it before the end of the month. But I want to play with my sisters now. They will cheer me up.
Paul: Good. Because I do not want a grumpy date.

The new month had begun. The RSC's color for June is blue and I dived into my blue stash/scrap pile to make my blocks.

Lo and Behold

It started here, when Julie mentioned my name on her blog in the same sentence with Scrap Vortex quilts.  It was official.
Hi, I am Preeti and I am a scrap vortex addict. And here is my latest - meet Lo and Behold.

I wanted to quilt a spiral in true scrap vortex spirit.
I found the center and started to quilt - p a i n f u l l y   s l o w l y.
And then I came to the horror of my horrors conclusion - I cannot quilt a tight circle/spiral with my walking foot.

Painstakingly stitches were removed. But I was not going to give up.
Just because I couldn't do a spiral in the beginning does not mean that I won't do a spiral at all.

Modification Quilting - I started with a triangle and echo quilted it till it was large enough and then started the circular spiral quilting.

Now, it is possible that the quilting spiral flattened out as it reached the edges. But you are ok with that, right?

Let me show the back? Oh my quiltyness, you gotta see the back. I used the scrappy triangles leftover from Fire Pit to make the pieced backing.

From Scraps to Scrumptious

Princess Bonniebella's little lamb was missing.  Oh no.

May be the birds saw him scamper off.
Did you see my little lamb, she asked.

The birds chirped and turned their heads left. Bonniebella followed them. But she was so engrossed in looking at the birds that she stepped on a crab.

Bitten by the crab, she cried out in pain. The lazy turtles opened their droopy eyes.
The fox jumped over the bush.

Charlie Brown heard her scream. What happened he asked.
The dancing elves explained.
Charlie rushed to help the princess get rid of the crab claw. Snoopy followed - this was a new adventure.

As the pain eased, Bonniebella noticed Snoopy. Oh that is an adorable puppy, she said.
Snoopy smiled a big floppy smile and scampered away.
They ran after him. Over the fields and flowers, past the foxes and the penguins.
Let me chase those pink and purple cats, thought Snoopy, and he switched direction.

The princess and Charlie followed.
The colorful turtles just nodded with amusement - Why the fuss, they thought?
When Snoopy saw the fierce monsters, he froze.

Finally, Charlie and the princess caught up with him.
Charlie scolded him but the princess held him. And Snoopy was calm.

I am hungry, said Charlie. I am exhausted, said the princess.
Oh look there is a cup cake and candy too.

But it was just a picture. No real cake.
The elves whispered - you can make your own cake.

Here are the ingredients - eggs, butter, milk and flour.

Look, I found a whisk.

See the whisk? Next to the crabs.

But how will we cook it. We have no oven.
May be the fire-breathing dragons can help with that, winked the elves.

The wafting smell from the baking was an invitation to all the creatures - crabs, cats, birds, turtles, and penguins.

Foxes and owls came too. Lo and Behold there was a party and everyone enjoyed the cake.

And although you can buy and eat readymade cupcake isn't it sweeter when you make your own - be it a quilt or a cupcake?

P.S. Charlie asked the princess - why did you leave the safety of your palace?
I lost my little lamb and went looking for him.

Can you find the lamb? Do you see him now?

Do you know why the lights on the Christmas tree shine so bright?  Because they are plugged into the sunflower which draws its energy from the sun. :-D

Lo and Behold finished at about 57" by 58.5". this is my 18th finish of the year and I am loving it.
