Island Batik - Try a Tool Blog Hop

Welcome to Day Two of Island Batik's August 2021 Blog Hop - Try a Tool.

My assignment was to use the Butterfly Blooms collection and the Corner Pop 3 Ruler to make a project.

Butterfly Blooms, designed by Kathy Engle, is shipping to stores in September 2021.
Let's first feast our eyes on the lovely fabrics.

Inspiration Board

If you like these fabrics, you are about to be how bright they look in person.

On my cutting table

These colors remind me of the Crape Myrtle trees that are in full bloom these days.

On my morning walk (looking at the trees, ignoring the trashcan)

Of course I plucked some so that I could match the colors with the Butterfly Blooms.

Perfect match!!!

The Corner Pop 3 Ruler is a template to make skinny triangles with a base to height ratio of 1:3.
If the base of the finished triangle is 1.5" the height of the triangle will be 4.5".

New to the CP3 ruler I started with a few practice blocks.

Its a start

Black is beautiful

I prefer the black background, I said aloud. Paul said that he liked the neutral background. Hmmm...

So I made half light and half dark blocks and arranged in a checkerboard pattern.

Ya Basic!!!

This layout did not appeal to me and I felt disappointed. I turned to newly acquired EQ8. Here are a few ideas that I discarded.

Seriously? NO!!!

Now we were in business...

You are a Star!

Fuchsia Binding :-)

Cinderella finished at 45" square and I love her :-)

But what about those blocks in black and beige? Something had to become of those too.
Well then, meet Jacqueline and Marguerite, both finished at 40" square.

I am sweet

Here are the three sisters, Jacqueline, Cinderella and Marguerite, enjoying the sun on a warm August day.

Sunny day on the banks of the Potomac

Mission Accomplished!!!

But wait there is more. My initial concept was a pillow cover.

Enjoying EQ8

But that was discarded in favor of a wall hanging (or a table runner).

It is time to go "Back to School". These fish are so yummy I can just eat them up :-D

Don't you swim away!!!

Three quilts and a wall hanging/table runner all using the Butterfly Blooms fabric collection and the Corner Pop3 Ruler. Challenge met!!! What do you think?

In other news, the Positivity QAL is coming to a close. I have completed my quilt (blogpost coming on August 22).

To be eligible for the prizes, you must participate in the linky party and the finished quilts must reach Bernie by the due date. See full schedule here

  1. I am always amazed at how many projects you complete! They're all fabulous and the fish are cute! That would make a great pattern for your Etsy shop. ;)

  2. You always meet the challenge and then go above and beyond it, too! Beautiful fabric and lots of interesting design possibilities with the tool/block. You can never go wrong with a star block, but I really love Jacqueline!

  3. I just love the fish! the stars too - lovely and the fabric is a plus

  4. All of your projects are beautiful, but I love Cinderella!

  5. Each quilt is just fantastic, Preeti, but I'm terribly fond of the fish! What fun!

  6. What a beautiful trio of Sisters! And how in the world do you get so many quilts made? Love those batiks - the colors you used are some of my favorite!

  7. So beautiful! Cinderella is of course my favourite :)
    Very cool technique!

  8. Wonderful use of the ruler! I love them all, but the fishes want me to go to school with them. Have fun with EQ....if you need any help feel free to find me!

  9. Pretty projects. I like seeing your thinking process for the layout.

  10. Ah, Preeti, of course you made four quilts. How could you not, with such pretty fabric? I love the fish! They are very original and fun. The stars are quite lovely, too, especially Jacqueline. I'd say you met the challenge really well!

  11. Wow, Preeti! That's a whole lot of pretty! I love them ALL! I keep thinking one is my favorite, then I'll look at a picture of one of the others and decide THAT's my favorite! Love the names, too, and how you have the trio of sisters. And the fish!!!! Love it!

  12. Love, love, love all that you've created here! Those fish are so cute!

  13. So beautiful, each and every one!

  14. oh those fabrics are wonderfully bright and fun. I love your quilts. the black makes the pinks/purples/teals pop. I love your table runner. thse fish are cool. thanks for sharing

  15. LOOOOOOVE every single Project!! The fish are soooo fun!! You are so Creative.. & thanks for sharing about the new tool too :)

  16. Yep - you totally conquered the challenge - Love Cinderella a whole lot and those fish - they are really cool!! Well done Preeti!

  17. I do love how you have used these batik fabrics, very inspiring! And, your photo journey makes your post a delight to scroll through!

  18. Love this fabric line and ALL your projects, Preeti!! You definitely met the challenge, and Cinderalla does NOT have any ugly step-sisters!! LOL

  19. Ooooh, you had me at 'butterflies!' And I see butterflies in 'Blah' and 'Whatever'. 'Tortured' is intriguing. And your first blocks make me think of ballerinas. And the 'fish'. They make me giggle.
YOU are such a productive woman............sigh.

  20. Wow they are all so beautiful!! I think the fish would make a great child's quilt.

  21. So many patterns from this one ruler. Awesome!!! Your projects are great!!!

  22. Love your pink and purple fish!

  23. So many projects and so pretty. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

  24. So many pretty projects, Preeti!! And I know why they tugged at me when I saw them. I heard my small daughter’s voice many years ago when asked what her favorite color was: “pinkpurpleandturquoise.” Yup those colors still say “happy.” I love the stars, but I’m intrigued by the fish tails, trying to figure out just how you did the piecing on those. I love the delicate structures of the fish.

  25. Cindereally really is a beauty! But I am most impressed with how you get there. You just start... play around... ponder it some more and then finish your star item. And the three others that "just happend along the way" ;) We both know, how I would do it... xo Melanie

  26. The three ladies are beautiful, but it is the fish that have stolen my heart. I can almost see their pointy fins swishing through tropical waters. Thanks for sharing your preliminary designs. It's fun to see all of the possibilities.

  27. All three of your "tools" quilts turned out beautifully. I love EQ8 for figuring out what to try next for a quilt layout. Happy stitching this weekend.

  28. Wow, 4 projects to feature the new toy! I see you totally master the CP3 ruler ;)) These fabrics are gorgeous, and you made four very beautiful quilts with them. Love the cute ladies, and the yummy runner too!
Thank you for sharing and linking up today!

  29. Great blocks created in a unique way. Have an awesome week.

  30. I'm always amazed at the many variations you make for your Island Batik challenges. Coming up with multiple design ideas is one thing, but you actually end up with completed quilts for all those designs--incredible!

  31. Very inventive! You found a sea of creativity with this tool

  32. A beautiful, creative post Preeti, love the quilts and the fish and how you have quilted them. Those batik fabrics are just wonderful too. Well done.

  33. Oh my goodness! I'm in love with the colors!! You were so productive with that new tool. And each project is unique. Very well done! The fish are my favorite though.

  34. Love them all but the fish are amazing!

  35. wow! so many amazing quilts and projects! Love them all

  36. What a load of eye candy! As a pisces, I just have to say I LOVE THE FISH!!! So sweet! I already have the Corner Pop ruler. I'm wondering how similar that one is with the Corner Pop 3. I'm feeling like I should make some fish!

  37. You do such nice work
Always an inspiration to view your blog

  38. Wonderful blocks and quilts! I love your playing in EQ8 - it does make some things simpler!!! I can't believe 4 quilts for a are quite the ambassador!
